San Diego, California, United States of America
October 1-5, 2007
Mike Doherty and Terry Becker attended the NFPA 70E Technical Committee meetings during the week of October 1 to 5, 2007 representing the CSA Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety Standard. Also attending from the CSA Z462 Technical Committee, and on the Executive of the Committee. was Daniel Roberts of Schneider Electric.
This NFPA 70E Technical Committee meeting was scheduled to review the 801 comments received supplemental to the over 500 proposals received earlier in 2007 from stakeholders. The proposals originally received were part of the process to allow the public at large to submit requests for consideration by the NFPA 70E TC for changes or additions to be considered for the pending 7th Edition of NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, 2009. The proposals received had been previously reviewed by the NFPA 70E Technical Committee in a "Review of Proposals (ROP)" meeting. The "Review of Comments (ROC)" meeting is one of the last phases in the formal revisional cycle for NFPA 70E before the proposed changes go to ballot. Following the ballot process, and acceptance or rejection, the final draft of the 7th Edition of NFPA 70E will be put forward for formal adoption in June 2008 during the NFPA World Safety Conference, in Las Vegas, NV.
After being successfully adopted it is anticipated that the 7th Edition of NFPA 70E, 2009 would go to print in the fall of 2008 and be available to the public thereafter.
For specific details, status, dates, and access to documents see NFPA's website.
It was an enlightening week attending and participating in the meetings. There were over 50 people from across all industry sectors in attendance at the meetings that were held at the Hilton Mission Valley, San Diego, CA. The days were long, varying in length from 10 hours to 14, a lot of work had to get done and everyone was engaged to make it happen. Ray Jones, the Chair of NFPA 70E did an amazing job of keeping everyone focussed. Joe Sheehan, the NFPA Staff Liason for 70E provided direction and guidance when needed.
There are some excellent revisions coming in the 7th Edition of NFPA 70E, 2009. This amazing resource for assisting you in improving electrical safety for workers, is only getting better!!

PS:
I love to golf and it was a treat to see both the Cornado Golf Course, on Cornado Island and Torrey Pines where the 2008 US Open will be held in January. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to get out for a round.
