"Historically, electrical hazards were viewed primarily as electric shock or electrocution hazards. Electric shock entails passage of electric current through the body. A shock victim generally makes contact with an energized conductor or otherwise becomes part of the electric circuit. While addressing the electric shock hazard is important - it is the cause of most fatal injuries from electric energy (Cawley & Homce, 2003, 2006) - it has masked another electrical hazard associated with the intense radiant and convective energy released during an electric arc flash event. A person need not make physical contact with an energized conductor or be part of the electrical circuit to be injured by arc flash. The victim may be serveral feet away from energized conductors or equipment and be severly injured by the intense thermal energy transfer produced by an electric arc."

Arc Flash Videos
The following are videos of the arc flash demonstrations that occurred in the afternoon after the seminars held on November 1 and 2, 2007 at the Kinetrics High Voltage Laboratory.
Terry Becker and Mike Doherty were in attendance. It is amazing the impression that seeing a real arc flash makes on you, if we could only get every electrician to actually see an arc flash, I know they would all wear electrical specific arc flash PPE. It leaves a lasting impression with you, you see why you must respect working on energized electrical equipment, why you need to be qualified/competent and of course wear the right arc rated electrical specific PPE.
